200+ Love Letters for Katie
In October 2023, we shared the story of Katie— a young woman who recently lost her father and was nominated to receive a Love Letter Bundle from her friend Cass. Katie comes from a big family and her friend described her as “tenacious and kind,” yet shy and hard on herself.
October was Katie’s birthday month, and we really wanted to make it extra memorable for her.
Her friend Cass wrote to us, “Katie loves listening to The Hobbit audiobook (again), dreaming up what could be done with her new home, gallows humor, cooking classes with her partner Tony, plants and gardening, Dolly Parton, baking, and coming up with little projects to do with her nieces and nephews.”

Cass reported, “I sent the first batch of over 200 letters from 35 states and 5 countries, and it arrived to Katie at the end of November. After an evening delivery and a soggy night on her stoop, Katie grabbed the box of letters on her way to work. Unpacking the letters to allow them to dry once she arrived, she said she "felt like Bilbo coming to an overflowing mailbox" (I vaguely recall the details of The Hobbit, but from what I understand, he'd sent out invitations thinking no one would RSVP).
She was so touched that so many strangers had taken the time to sit down and write without expecting something in return. When explaining the project to someone else, they cried with gratitude to be reminded of the kindness of others.”
